The papers include letters, exhibition catalogues, publications, clippings, artwork, magazines, store ledger and photographs relating to Arthur Smith and his work as a jewelry designer. In addition, there are various documents and photographs relating to Objects: USA; brochures for Ed Wiener's Arts & Ends Studio, Art Smith Jewelry and the Hatch-Billops Collection; collages; and drawings. There are exhibition catalogues for Contemporary African American Crafts, The Haystack Encounter: Summer of 1974, Structure and Ornament: American Modernist Jewelry 1940-1960, Arthur Smith: A Jeweler's Retrospective, and Brookfield 25: An Anniversary Exhibition 1979. Includes photographs of Arthur Smith, jewelry and models wearing jewelry. Some of the photographs are by Anthony Locke, Yvonne O'Neal, Dunc Butler, George Platt Lynes, A. Himmelreich, Arthur Mones, Lida Moser, Irwin Kahn, and Coreen Simpson. Also included are magazines containing articles or advertisements relating to Arthur Smith, including Opportunity: Journal of Negro Life (January-March 1948), The New Yorker (December 5, 1953 and November 13, 1954), Craft Horizons (January/February 1970), Live (November 24, 1952), and American Fabrics and Fashions Magazine (Fall 1983).

Arthur Smith was born in New York City in 1917. He attended Cooper Union where he studied architecture, painting and decorative design. After collaborating with another artist on jewelry designs, he later opened a shop and studio on Cornelia Street in New York City.
